The Paint Pods and Ochre Beds

The Paint Pods and the ochre beds were originally discovered and used by the  Kootenay (Ktunaxa), the Stoney and the Blackfoot tribes. They cleaned the yellow ochre, kneaded the ochre into little balls which were flattened into cakes then baked and crushed. The red ochre was then mixed with animal fat or fish oil. The paint was then used for many things like body painting, painting on  tepees, and paintings on rocks (pictographs like you see in Gressi Lakes or Grotto Canyon).
In the early 1900's  the ochre was dug out by hand, put in sacks and hauled away by horses and wagon to Castle Mountain, where it was shipped by train to Calgary and used as pigment for paint. Then in the 1920's, when technology improved, the ochre was collected with friznals  (horse drawn scoops) and ground by machines. When this area became Kootenay National Park, mining of the ochre beds were phased out to protect the landscape.

Sangudo Alberta
Sangudo is a hamlet 62 miles northwest of Edmonton. On April 12, 1937, Sangudo was incorporated as a village, but reverted to a hamlet  on September 16, 2007. Sangudo has a  nice campground, school, ball park, playground, and more. We stay at the Deep Creek Campground when traveling in the area as it is a quiet spot near the river. Check out the video as Sangudo has many interesting things.
