The Atlas Coal Mine near Coulee Alberta

The Atlas Coal Mine

The Atlas Coal Mine was built in 1937 and is the last wooden coal tipple in Canada that is still
standing. At seven stories high it was used for loading and sorting coal. A lot of old mining
equipment and buildings  still stand at the site. The site preserves the artifacts of the miners
that once mined the coal. Thirteen people died during the mine's operation
On June 24, 1941, an explosion killed three men, and a fourth person died trying to rescue
them. Atlas was declared an Alberta Provincial Historic Resource in 1989, and then in 2002, it
became a National Historic Site of Canada.

The Frank Slide

April was unusually warm, with snowmelt and rain running into the mountain cracks then the weather turned cold again. On April 28th, the water in Turtle Mountain froze and the mountain reached its breaking point.
On April 29, 1903, at 4:10 am, over 90 million tons of limestone sheered off the east face of Turtle Mountain and slid down into Crowsnest Pass. The avalanche destroyed part of the town Frank, NWT (now Alberta), a coalmine entrance, one and a half miles of railway and two ranches. Approximately 70 people lost their lives. There were 23 survivors, mostly children.

Anyone who has heard of the Frank Slide has heard of the baby girl, the only survivor, found on a boulder. That story is untrue. Three little girls survived the slide. Fernie Watkins was found in the debris. Fifteen-month old Marion Leitch was thrown from her house and found in a pile of hay. Gladys Ennis, 27 months old, was found in the mud by her mother Lucy, who saved her baby's life by clearing the mud out of her nose and throat. Gladys was the last survivor of the slide when she died in 1995 in Bellevue, Washington.

In October  of 1874, 150 North West Mounted Police (NWMP) established the first police post on an Island in the Old Man River 100 miles south of Calgary, Alberta. The main reason for establishing the post was to wipe out the whisky trade on the southern plains. After a few years they moved to the present site due to flooding. In 1878 the headquarters moved to Fort Walsh. Fort Walsh is located in the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, near Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.
Fort Macleod, Alberta was incorporated as a town in 1892. The population in 2021 was 3,022.
